What this duty is
A heater is a heat exchanger sized so the cold stream leaves at a specified temperature. The hot side is typically steam, thermal oil, or a hotter process fluid. Selection is driven by duty, allowable pressure drop, fouling, and whether the hot side condenses.
Where it is used
- Reactor feed and jacket-water heaters
- Storage-tank and pipeline tracing circuits (when a process exchanger is specified)
- Column feed preheat
- Utility water and CIP solution heating where a shell-and-tube unit is the specified construction
Typical services
Steam heating of process liquidsHot-oil heatingProcess-to-process heating (interchangers)Water and glycol heating
Engineering selection
- Condensing steam on the shell side is common because it gives a high coefficient and even temperature — unless the purchaser specification puts steam in the tubes.
- Control of outlet temperature is a process/instrument issue. The exchanger is sized for the design case; turndown and bypass must be stated if they affect area.
- Thermal expansion between a hot shell and cooler tubes favours U-tube construction or a fixed tubesheet with a shell expansion joint when ΔT is large.
- Do not assume a single steam pressure or heat-transfer area. Those follow the enquiry.
