Heat Exchanger Material Selection

Material is a corrosion and code decision owned by the process engineer. The fabricator executes the specified MOC — they should not guess it from a marketing page.

Ohm Engineers lists carbon steel and stainless steels (304 / 316 / 316L) as the standard materials we work with on heat exchangers. Duplex and other alloys are used when the enquiry specifies them and mill supply supports the delivery. We do not publish a corrosion-rate table for every chemical — that belongs to your materials engineer.

Typical pairings (indicative, not a substitute for a spec)

Service characterOften specified
Cooling water / steam utilities, non-corrosive processCarbon steel
Mildly corrosive process, oxygenated water, many chemical dutiesSS 304 / 316 / 316L
Chloride-bearing or specified sour/duplex dutiesDuplex or other alloys — only if named

What to write on the RFQ

Shell, channel, tubesheet, tubes, and bolting — each line. 'SS internally' is ambiguous (clad vs solid vs tubes only). Gaskets and packing must match the fluid. If you need NACE / ISO 15156, say so explicitly.
